How Acumen Helps Legal Teams Act, Adapt, and Optimize: Q&A with Cory Flynn
|
Q: Cory, you’ve said that agility and insight are now essential for legal teams. What’s driving that urgency?
A: Legal teams are under immense pressure to do more with less. The volume and complexity of litigation is increasing, and teams are managing tighter budgets, evolving regulations, and fast-moving case timelines. To succeed, they need to move quickly, make informed decisions, and optimize how resources are used. The challenge is many legal departments are still working with siloed data that exists across many instances and rigid systems that slow them down. That’s why we built Acumen – to break down those barriers.
Q: Let’s start with agility. How does Acumen help legal teams act faster?
A: Traditional legal tech environments – especially multi-tenant setups – don’t give users much autonomy. When a team needs to create a new workspace or process data, they’re usually at the mercy of a service provider. That might work for slower moving matters, but in urgent situations, it creates delays that impact outcomes. Acumen flips that model by giving clients secure, elevated permissions to manage their own workspaces and data. They can create workspaces, add users, process data – on demand. That’s real-time control, and it’s a game-changer.
Q: And that level of control doesn’t compromise security?
A: Not at all. That’s one of the things we’re most proud of. Acumen operates in a secure environment separate from either Relativity Server and RelativityOne, but with role-based access controls to those systems that give teams exactly the autonomy they need – nothing more, nothing less. Every action is auditable, and clients don’t need to sacrifice oversight to gain speed. It’s a balance that legal departments have been looking for, and now they don’t have to choose between security and efficiency.
Q: What about visibility? Why is that such a critical piece?
A: Visibility is the foundation of good decision-making. If a legal team can’t see what’s happening across their matters – how much they’re spending, where their time is going, which cases are ballooning in cost – they can’t manage effectively. Acumen brings all that data together in one place. It aggregates cross-matter metrics and provides dashboards and reports that give legal leaders a bird’s-eye view of their portfolio. That means they can spot trends, make informed calls on staffing and budgeting, and justify decisions with data.
Q: Flexibility is another core theme – how does Acumen support that?
A: Legal teams are constantly adjusting. New cases come in, others settle or go dormant, teams expand or contract. Acumen gives our clients insights into what is happening with their cases, and the flexibility to respond immediately to needs. If they need to onboard new users or respond to sudden spikes in data volume, they can do it immediately – and scale back when things slow down. That adaptability saves time and money and helps teams stay focused on strategy rather than logistics.
Q: You’ve described Acumen as more than just a product – it’s part of how Array thinks about partnership. What does that mean?
A: Exactly. We didn’t build Acumen to be a standalone tool – we built it as an extension of our clients’ teams. It reflects our philosophy that client service isn’t just about quick responses - it’s about empowering our clients with the tools and freedom to work with their data directly, and giving them visibility into what’s happening across their matters. We’re not just solving today’s problem – we’re helping them future-proof their operations with better visibility, autonomy, and efficiency.
Q: Final thoughts – what makes Acumen different in the legal tech space?
A: It’s the combination of autonomy, intelligence, and scale. Most platforms give you one or two of those, but not all three. Acumen delivers all of it in one unified experience. Legal teams get the speed they need, the data they can trust, and the flexibility to adapt as they go. That’s what makes Acumen more than a platform – it’s a partner in performance. And that’s how we help our clients not just react to challenges but lead through them.
